BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION

OBJECTIVES

The Building and Construction Program provides a range of statistics relating to anticipated and actual construction activity including dwelling creation and the formation of other fixed infrastructure. This information is used in compiling the Australian National Accounts, to monitor the performance of the economy and supports the production of population statistics.

The program consists of:

  • monthly planned investment in new building work and anticipated dwelling creation for Australia and smaller regions through the compilation of building approval records
  • construction statistics on activity levels in residential building, non-residential building and engineering construction.

The main clients include: the Treasury; the Reserve Bank of Australia; state and territory agencies; industry organisations and associations; and financial and academic institutions.

As well as being key inputs to the Australian National Accounts, Building and Construction program outputs are widely used for economic monitoring and forecasting and to inform monetary policy. Small area outputs are used in monitoring economic and population changes for regions, being an essential input to regional planning.
